Forensic Interviews

When a child speaks, we listen with care, patience, and respect. Our interviews are designed to protect the child from further harm while helping their story be heard clearly and compassionately by those who are here to help.

Forensic Interviews

The Midland Rape Crisis and Children’s Advocacy Center brings together a team of professionals to ensure a collaborative, child-centered response to allegations of abuse. We coordinate closely with law enforcement, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), prosecutors, forensic interviewers, and family advocates to support children and their families through every step of the investigative process.

By working together under one roof, we limit the number of times a child must tell their story, and provide a safer, more compassionate path toward healing and justice.

What Happens After a Report of Child Abuse Is Made

  1. A Report Is Made
A concerned adult reports suspected abuse or neglect by calling the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) hotline at 1-800-252-5400, and 911 if the child is in immediate danger.

  2. Referral to the Children’s Advocacy Center
If appropriate, the investigative agency, DFPS or law enforcement, contacts the Midland Rape Crisis and Children’s Advocacy Center to schedule a forensic interview for the child.

  3. Forensic Interview Takes Place
The child is interviewed in a safe, child-friendly setting by a specially trained forensic interviewer. The interview is designed to be non-leading, age-appropriate, and trauma-informed.

  4. Multidisciplinary Team Proceeds with Investigation
DFPS, law enforcement, and the District Attorney’s office work together to review the case and determine next steps in the investigation and legal process.

  5. Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE)
If there are concerns of sexual abuse, the child may receive a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam, which is conducted by a specially trained nurse, to assess the child’s health and collect evidence if necessary.

  6. Ongoing Support and Therapy
If abuse is disclosed, the child and their non-offending family members may be referred to the center’s therapy program for ongoing emotional support and healing services.
