Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) Accompaniment

SAFE Accompaniment

You Don’t Have to Face This Alone

If you or someone you care about has experienced a recent sexual assault, you have the right to support, starting with your first steps toward safety and care.

The Midland Rape Crisis and Children’s Advocacy Center provides 24/7 hospital accompaniment for survivors of sexual assault undergoing a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) at Midland Memorial Hospital. This exam is typically offered within 120 hours (5 days) of the assault and is conducted by a specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).

What to Expect

When a survivor arrives at the hospital for a SAFE, one of our trained staff members or volunteer advocates can be called to meet them in the emergency room. Advocates are there to:

  • Offer emotional support during the medical and forensic exam

  • Help survivors understand their rights and options

  • Ensure access to clothing

  • Provide referrals for additional resources

Our presence helps survivors feel seen, respected, and supported during an often overwhelming and vulnerable moment.

You’re in Control

Choosing to have a forensic exam does not mean you must report to law enforcement. Sexual Assault Forensic Exams are available regardless of whether a survivor chooses to file a police report. Advocates can help explain the reporting process and ensure survivors understand all their options, without pressure or judgment.
